Parents – Another great year of 7th grade comes to an end! I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know each and every student, and I know they will be very successful in 8th grade!

Students – I will be traveling to South America this summer, and I will try to blog here as much as possible. I really hope that you follow my blog and leave me some comments! I will be leaving Denver on Thursday, May 28, traveling to Bolivia and then Peru for about 3 weeks. I’ll return to Denver on June 16. I can’t wait to share my experiences and pictures with you, and I hope to hear from you throughout my trip!

This week in geography, students presented their powerpoints on their assigned South American country to their classmates. Overall, the kids did a fantastic job! Next week we will be continuing to learn about South America through the second part of the project, involving a debate on whether or not South America should adopt a common currency. This is especially relevant in these economic times, because students will learn a lot about how economics and global markets work.

Students were given study guides this week for the South America test, which will be on Wednesday, February 25.

This week in geography, students learned about Pacific South America, including Peru, Chile, and Bolivia. Next week we will move on to learn about Central America and Mexico, before coming back to South America for a project. Be on the lookout for a rubric and the requirements to come home with your child. As usual, this project will be completed in class.

Right now the South America test is scheduled for February 25. If that changes, I will let you know.

Wow – I have been terrible about updating the blog this year! Yikes! I guess I need to make it a New Years resolution to do this weekly.

With a brand new semester comes a brand new continent, South America! South America is an exciting, unique continent, and we’ll be doing some fun activities and projects this quarter. This past week we focused on Chapter 11 in the textbook, learning about Brazil and Argentina. Next week we will move on to Paraguay and Uraguay, as well as the Pacific countries of South America.

Adios! :)

This week in geography, we spent much of our time studying for the Europe geography test, which will be on Wednesday, October 8. Students were given a study guide, and we made flashcards, “study catchers”, and used some really fun online games! Please encourage your student to study.

We will have a COD quiz next Friday, October 10. Just to remind you, these are “open planner” quizzes based on our warm up activity, the Country of the Day (COD). We have these every other Friday.

Also, 1st quarter ends next Friday! For 2nd quarter, we will study Asia. It should be fun!

This week in geography….

We continued with our introduction to Europe. Students worked on and completed a physical map of Europe, and we took a look at Chapter 13 in the textbook. On Friday we did an activity called “The Scramble for Wealth”. You can take a look at the “Scramble for Wealth 2.0″ posting, and read the students’ comments on what they learned and their thoughts.

Mr. Shoop, my student teacher, is slowly taking over the classes. We will continue to teach back and forth for the next few weeks, with him taking over completely by the end of first quarter. And of course, if you have any questions or comments, feel free to email me at kdensmore@lewispalmer.org.

Stay tuned for information on our first project, which will begin on September 17.

It was so nice to meet many of you yesterday at Back-To-School Night! We have some really great kids this year – I am very excited!

This week in geography, we have been reviewing the vocabulary terms from Chapters 1, 2, and 5. We’ve spent some time making crossword puzzles, playing “pictionary” with the key terms, and putting the terms into sentences. We also started our first continent – Europe! Today we had the first Country of the Day (COD) quiz. The COD is the warm up activity the students work on at the beginning of each class period. There are different things they have to find out about the country of the day. They write the answers in their planner, and then every other week we will have an “open planner” quiz.

I also wanted to take a moment and let you all know that I have a student teacher this semester. His name is Robert Shoop, and he has been a lawyer for the past 20+ years and has decided he wants to be a teacher. He will be in my classroom with me until December. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me, or you can email him at rshoop@lewispalmer.org.

We are going to have a great year! Enjoy the three day weekend!

Welcome to Mrs. Densmore’s World Geography class!

I am so excited to have you or your student in my class this year! This blog has a couple of different purposes. I use it every Friday to email out a weekly update, which is mostly for parents. In class we will use it as a place to have discussions and where I can read your thoughts on some class activities we will do. As I get to know each class better, I will introduce the blog and how we use it (no last names, for example) in class. If you have already found this, feel free to leave me a comment!

Stay tuned….

Students – I missed you all today! However, I was up in Denver, getting to be the student for the day. I attended the Colorado Council for the Social Studies annual conference, which is always a great opportunity to meet with other social studies teachers across the state, learn about new resources and technology, and get ideas for how to make my classroom even more fun! :)

Parents – this week in geography, we continued with the last week of the Council of South America project. This weeks topic of debate was creating a common currency. The students really got thinking, and came up withe some creative, well-thought out reasons why South America should, or shouldn’t, have a common currency. I should have final grades for this project in the gradebook by next week.

Please remember that COD’s are due every Friday. We will have a test in a few weeks – I will hand out study guides in class next week.

I know that there are quite a few of you, both parents and students, reading this – go ahead, click on the “comment” link near the date, and leave me a message! I would love to hear from you! This blog has had over 3,000 hits since I started it in August. WOW!!!

The first week back from a nice break is always hard to adjust to! But we only have 7 weeks left, and the kids are charging to the finish line!

This week in geography, we worked on Week Two of the Council of South America. The topic was air pollution, and the students had a chance to debate, brainstorm solutions, write position papers, create resolutions, and present a news report, depending on their position in the Council. The students learned a lot about the procedure, similar to the United Nations, and should be ready for another week of debate on Monday. I am looking forward to hearing their thoughts on some economic problems and solutions for the South American continent!
