Missing!

April 24, 2008 · 86 Comments

Today in class we participated in a simulation called “Missing!”, in which Juan Verdad, an editor of a newspaper in Barbarica is kidnapped due to a piece he published in his newspaper exposing the massacre and torture of the Indigi peoples. The Humongous International (HI) corporation is taking over Indigi lands in order to mine there, using torture and massacre to “convince” the Indigi peoples to leave their land. Once Juan’s article is published exposing this to the Barbarican people, he is missing!

In your first paragraph, tell me about your particular role and experience in the simulation. What role did you have? Did you ever end of in jail? How well did you represent your role? Was it hard to figure out which options to choose?

In the second paragraph, tell me how you think this simulation applies to the real world. Do you think things like this happen? What sorts of human rights violations occur? How would having more rights in Barbarica have helped Juan? Do you think this simulation was realistic? Which factors were the most important leading to Juan’s eventual release? If you had lived in a country like Barbarica all your life, would YOU ever take risks?

Due by Monday, April 28, at 3:00pm.

Students – I missed you all today! However, I was up in Denver, getting to be the student for the day. I attended the Colorado Council for the Social Studies annual conference, which is always a great opportunity to meet with other social studies teachers across the state, learn about new resources and technology, and get ideas for how to make my classroom even more fun! :)

Parents – this week in geography, we continued with the last week of the Council of South America project. This weeks topic of debate was creating a common currency. The students really got thinking, and came up withe some creative, well-thought out reasons why South America should, or shouldn’t, have a common currency. I should have final grades for this project in the gradebook by next week.

Please remember that COD’s are due every Friday. We will have a test in a few weeks – I will hand out study guides in class next week.

I know that there are quite a few of you, both parents and students, reading this – go ahead, click on the “comment” link near the date, and leave me a message! I would love to hear from you! This blog has had over 3,000 hits since I started it in August. WOW!!!

The first week back from a nice break is always hard to adjust to! But we only have 7 weeks left, and the kids are charging to the finish line!

This week in geography, we worked on Week Two of the Council of South America. The topic was air pollution, and the students had a chance to debate, brainstorm solutions, write position papers, create resolutions, and present a news report, depending on their position in the Council. The students learned a lot about the procedure, similar to the United Nations, and should be ready for another week of debate on Monday. I am looking forward to hearing their thoughts on some economic problems and solutions for the South American continent!
